Whitstable is called the "Pearl of Kent" because of its fame for oysters. An Oyster Festival is held in July www.whitstableoysterfestival.co.uk. In the Domesday Book the town is Witestaple hwit stapol "white post" and Witenestaple, from witena stapol "meeting place post"

The town is full of shops in original buildings, some over 100 years old, but well looked after and making a very pleasant shopping stroll
